IEA Bioenergy is an international collaboration set-up in 1978 by the International Energy Agency (IEA) to improve international co-operation and information exchange between national bioenergy RD&D programmes. IEA Bioenergy Task 42 deals with knowledge building and exchange within the area of biorefining. The current countries member of the task are: The Netherlands (Task leader), Austria, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, USA.

Henning Jørgensen from University of Copenhagen has been Danish National Task Leader since the task was initiated in 2007. Currently, the national team includes Claus Felby from University of Copenhagen and Solange I. Mussatto from DTU-Biosustain.

The purpose of the network is to provide an international platform for collaboration and information exchange between industry, SMEs, GOs, NGOs, RTOs and universities concerning biorefinery research, development, demonstration, and policy analysis. This includes the development of networks, dissemination of information, and provision of science-based technology analysis. Over the years, a number of reports on specific topics of biorefining have been produced. The “Proteins for Food, Feed and Bio-based applications” report is the most recent one. An important part of the network is knowledge and information exchange. This year, the task introduced a newsletter. The plan is to prepare two newsletters annually.
