Andrea Corona has conducted his Ph.D. thesis in BioValue’s SeSE-project (Socio-economic, Sustainability, and Ethics). Below is a short summary of his findings and information on the defense.

PhD title: Environmental sustainability assessment of bio-products based on agricultural crop and crop residue feedstocks.

Biorefining has been suggested as one of the most promising route for sustainable biomass utilization and for production of new biobased products. A combination of various technologies allows the conversion of the whole feedstock biomass into a large array of commodities and specialty products. These combinations create a complex system capable of upgrading the entire biomass feedstock into different products, reducing the need of fossil-based resources.

The PhD project apply Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), at an early design stage, to investigate the environmental performance of different biorefinery configurations taking into account issues such as: feedstock, energy, ancillary chemicals consumption and externalities, waste generation etc.

The PhD project evaluates the biorefining stage and identifies impacts patterns, trade-offs and hotspots within the biorefining process. By combining process simulation and LCA three different biorefinery pathways were assessed to provide decision support to the biorefinery technology developers. The assessment identified the role different feedstocks, process configuration, and cascade utilization of the biorefinery output products plays in terms of environmental performance of the studied biorefinery value chains.

This works has demonstrated that implementing LCA at an early stage of the biorefinery design process can provide useful insight in terms of optimizing the environmental performance of biorefineries. Furthermore, the work demonstrates that it is also possible to apply LCA to provide relevant environmental performance information at an early design stage to support a more holistic decision-making process.
